MUSC Health has successfully implemented a virtual nursing program to combat nursing shortages and improve nurse satisfaction and patient care. This initiative, which began in late 2023, utilizes virtual nurses to handle non-clinical tasks like admissions, discharges, and patient education, allowing bedside nurses to focus on direct patient care. The program has resulted in significant time savings for nurses, increased efficiency, and improved patient experience, with both staff and patients reporting positive feedback. MUSC is now expanding the program beyond medical-surgical units to other departments like the Emergency Department and ICU.
